Protect Yourself from Impersonation Fraud
Understanding the Threat and Practical Steps for Prevention.
Impersonation fraud is on the rise, with reported cases increasing by 148% in the past year. Criminals now use advanced tactics to pose as trusted figures—The impact can be emotionally and financially devastating.
What is Impersonation Fraud?
Impersonation fraud happens when scammers pose as trusted individuals or organizations to deceive you.
Common tactics include fake emails from company leaders, phishing messages, false government threats, and urgent pleas from family members. These schemes rely on trust and familiarity to succeed.
Why Is Impersonation Fraud So Effective?
Impersonation fraud preys on basic human psychology, especially our instinct to trust authority and help those we know. Fraudsters are leveraging new AI tools to create highly realistic fake voices, images, and even live video, making scams harder to detect and easier to scale. Anyone with a phone or email can be a potential target.
How to Avoid Impersonation Fraud
The examples underline the importance of skepticism, even when a request appears to come from a trustworthy source. While impersonation fraud is constantly evolving, there are key steps you can take to reduce your risk:
1.- Stay Skeptical of Unusual or Urgent Requests
Pause before acting on unexpected, urgent requests for money or information. Scammers thrive on pressure. Always verify by contacting the sender through a trusted method
2.- Never Share Personal Information Unnecessarily
Be cautious if someone unexpectedly requests sensitive information like passwords or financial details. The Current Helpdesk does not ask for such details via email, text, or unsolicited phone calls.
3.- Educate Yourself and Others
Stay informed about scams and fraud tactics. Share information regularly with friends, family, and colleagues. Current provides training for employees on how to identify and respond to attempted fraud.
4.- Protect Your Online Presence
Review your privacy settings on social media and limit the amount of personal information you share publicly. Fraudsters use public details to make their impersonations more believable.
Spotting the Red Flags
Recognizing these signs and keeping a healthy sense of skepticism can help you avoid falling victim:

- Emails or calls with poor grammar, spelling errors, or unusual formatting.
- Requests to keep communications secret.
- Instructions to bypass normal procedures or controls.
- Payment requests involving gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.
- Messages coming from unofficial email addresses or unfamiliar phone numbers.
What To Do If You’ve Been Targeted
If you believe you’ve encountered impersonation fraud, act quickly. Swift action is critical to minimizing potential losses and stopping the fraudster from targeting others.

- Cease all communication with the suspected fraudster.
- Notify your bank or financial institution if money or information was given.
- Change any passwords or credentials that may have been compromised.
- File a report with local authorities and, if applicable, Current’s InfoSec team.
- Warn others in your circle of influence about the attempted scam.
Conclusion: Stay Vigilant, Stay Safe
Impersonation fraud remains a constant threat but staying alert and cautious can greatly reduce your risk. Always verify suspicious messages, protect your information, and share these safety tips to help others avoid scams. Taking proactive steps now can keep you and your community secure. As always, the InfoSec team is available to answer your questions at ~Current Security Team or Security.Current@CurrentLighting.com.
