Team Makes Improvements for Reese’s Law
Reese’s Law, enacted in August 2022 in the United States, aims to reduce incidents of children ingesting button cell and coin batteries, which can lead to serious internal injuries. The law impacts manufacturers and others in the supply chain who deal with products containing these batteries.
ANSI/UL 4200A-2024 specification mandates that all battery compartments are secure, requires opening with simultaneous hand-movements, and restricts access due to abuse. In addition, the product, its packaging, and accompanying instruction manuals must include warning labels prior to September 2024.
We found three key changes which Reese’s Law required: products that could switch to a AAA battery, products that required better battery compartment security, and products that only required warning labels due to sufficient battery security and soldered-in coin cell batteries.
Upon identifying the products affected by Reese’s Law, the team designed improvements to the battery compartment security methods (NXP2 & NXSW-WRS-WH), coordinated with OEM design partners to replace the coin cells to AAA batteries (NXAC2), and developed compliant warning labels. These labels were placed on all affected products, packaging boxes, instruction manuals, and were distributed to the manufacturer. Upon identifying all necessary compliance-related changes, the team made all the required improvements, which were achieved without disrupting product deliveries.
Albeo and Columbia representatives visited Acuna
The Acuna plant welcomed representatives from Albeo/Columbia: Yaseen Waheed, David Dudik, and Joel Hageman. Their visit aimed to present cost-saving projects and assess the progress and needs of our manufacturing teams. During their stay, they explored new opportunities to enhance efficiency, including expanding the manufacturing of metal and plastic components. Strategic meetings with packaging suppliers were also held to strengthen our supply chain and foster collaboration with affiliate plants. Their visit not only reaffirmed our partnership and commitment but also shed light on promising opportunities for operational improvement and strengthened teamwork and business relationships. We are excited about the positive outcomes of this encounter and eagerly look forward to continuing to collaborate to achieve our corporate goals.
More than Stinky: Phishing, Smishing, and Vishing
Phishing attacks are on the rise and are getting more creative, personalized, and malicious. Current is blocking thousands of phishing attacks each month, but occasionally a message gets through our protections. Phishing is an email that asks you to click a link or reply with information. They may look legitimate, sound urgent, and may have some of your personal information, but they fake and can infect your computer, cellphone, or device.
There are some places to check when you suspect a phish email: is the sender correct or known, does any link point to a real website, or is it urgent to verify or provide information? When you suspect a phishing email, please report it to the InfoSec team. You can use the Phish Alert Report button or the Report button, depending on your Outlook version. The InfoSec team can safely review the message and will return it to you if it is safe. It is preferred that suspected phishing emails are reported to better tune the protections of our email. Your reporting of a message allows similar messages to be removed from other mailboxes.
Angler phishing is a new type of phishing attack that targets your social media. Attackers disguise themselves as a Customer Service Agent or similar person to trick an unsatisfied customer into revealing their personal information or account credentials. Although mostly targeting your financial details, attackers may try to get your login credentials. The disguised identity usually includes the name of the financial institution or company to appear legitimate. They usually provide a link asking for account details and other information, or to install malware.
Protect yourself by verifying the actual contacting account, avoid clicking unknown links, or contact the financial institution or company directly through their known website or telephone number.
Smishing is probably a word you have not heard of. It is SMS/text message phishing. It could be an odd text message from someone or someplace asking you to click a link, buy gift cards, claiming you won a prize, or something else. You can be assured that our executives and managers will not text you asking for gift cards or other purchases. The shortened links in smishing texts can contain malware that infects your cellphone. Unfamiliar senders, urgency, threatening language, and unusual requests are all signs of smishing. Do not reply to the smishing sender as that confirms your phone number and opens you up to more smishing. Deleting the message and blocking the sender is a good basic protection. Investing in an anti-virus program for your phone may offer more protection from these and other phone attacks.
Vishing is another word that is probably unfamiliar. It is voice phishing. The attacker poses as a trustworthy or authoritative source during a phone call to try to trick you into providing forms of sensitive information, login credentials, or financial details. They may spoof the caller ID to appear legitimate. Vishing calls may be from a real person or be a pre-recorded robocall. Common vishing flags are unsolicited calls, bad call quality, urgent request or action is needed, and request for personal information. There are steps you can take to protect yourself: verify the caller with a return call to the number you know, ignore unknown calls, use call blocking or screening, or just trust your own instincts.
