The Importance of Password Management

Protecting Your Online Information

In today's digital era, managing passwords is very important. They are the keys to your most valuable information like personal emails and social media accounts, banking, and work-related systems. Passwords are the first defense against unauthorized access, so it is important to keep them secure.

What is Password Management?

Cybercriminals use sophisticated techniques to crack weak or reused passwords, which can lead to identity theft, financial loss, and privacy breaches. Password management involves creating, storing, and updating secure passwords. This helps prevent cyber-attacks like phishing and hacking.

Password Management

Good Practices for General Password Management

1.- Create Strong Passwords

Strong passwords should include a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Ideally, they should be at least 12 characters long and avoid easily guessable information like names or birthdates.

2.- Avoid Reusing Passwords

Each account should have its own unique password to prevent other concerns if one is compromised. Hackers can use a compromised password to guess your bank, social media, and work accounts if they are all the same.

3.- Update Passwords Regularly

Regularly updating passwords at least once per year helps keep your accounts safe from evolving cyber threats. Even strong passwords can become weak over time if not changed.

4.- Store Passwords Securely or Use Password Managers

It's important to store passwords securely. Writing them down or saving them in text files can be risky. Using password management apps is a better choice. Password management software stores and manages passwords within its secure environment. Some can even create complex passwords for you or alert you about weak or reused passwords.

5.- Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring multiple forms of verification before granting access. This makes unauthorized access less likely as you would be prompted about the login attempt.

6.- Regular Security Reviews

Conduct regular security reviews to check for password weaknesses and ensure MFA is enabled on all your key and critical accounts. Several internet browsers provide for password checking to see if your password is shared on the dark web. Change any exposed password to maintain your safety.

Managing passwords is important in today's digital world. Create strong passwords, store them securely, update them regularly, and use tools like password managers and MFA to protect against cyber threats. Your digital security starts with strong passwords. Take steps to manage them effectively and keep your online information safe. As always, the InfoSec team is available to answer your questions at ~Current Security Team or Security.Current@CurrentLighting.com.

Global Holiday Awareness

As we collaborate across borders and time zones, being mindful of global holidays helps us build a more thoughtful and inclusive workplace. This month, mark your calendar for:

St. John the Baptist Day (Canada)

June 24 - St. John the Baptist Day (Canada)

Known in French as La Fête nationale du Québec, this day is a big deal in Québec! It's more than just a day off—it's a celebration of Québécois identity, language, and culture.

Fun Facts & Significance:

  • The holiday honors St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of French Canadians.
  • Celebrations date back to 1834, making it one of North America's oldest public holidays.

Expect to see bonfires, live music, parades, and lots of blue and white flags (hello, Fleurdelisé!).

How to Be a Thoughtful Global Teammate

Be mindful of time off - Some colleagues may be offline or attending commemorations.

Schedule wisely - Consider “delay send” for emails and plan meetings around key observances.

Stay curious - Ask your teammates how they celebrate—you might learn something meaningful.
